One should not expect a miracle from any sleeping method. Conditions for each house and each baby may differ from one another. Do not think that the method that works for one baby will necessarily work for the other. However, you will see that your baby will fall asleep easier with the tips we will give you!
Sleeping is a physical need that all people have to include in their daily routines. While some sleep problems are specific to certain ages, some sleep-related conditions affect all of us regardless of our age. To solve your baby’s sleeping problems, first consider your own sleep:
- Do you sleep better when you sit all day doing nothing? Or is it when you are active and productive throughout the day and spend energy?
- Can you sleep with you are hungry or fully full?
- Would you like to sleep early with all the lights and / or the TV turned on in the house and obviously other people in the house are awake?
- If someone puts you in layers and layers of clothing, wants you to sleep, for instane: a sweater over your pajamas and a blanket over it, is it hot? Or would you be more comfortable in this hell-like environment?
The answers to these questions probably the same for the majority. These situations impair the sleep quality of most adults or prevent them from going to sleep. However, we apply these techniques, which we will not apply to ourselves, to our baby.
For example, thinking that the baby will sleep well at night, we first fill his/her little belly or thinking the baby will get cold while sleeping, so we dress him/her in excessively thick clothes and expect baby to sleep peacefully.
It doesn’t stop there either. We also try to create a sleeping habit in babies without thinking about the reason, with the advice from family elders and friends.
Finally, whichever method you try in sleep training, you should be patient for at least 2 weeks to see if it works.
Unless there are major health problems that prevent the baby from sleeping, it will not be easy to change this habit, as your baby is used to sleeping in a certain way. Of course, he/she will cry and resist sleeping at first. It’s hard for a mother to endure these cries, we know, but it’s not a miracle to get your baby to get a good sleep habit, it’s just patience and perseverance. If you’re ready for your baby to fall asleep, here are tricks to get baby to sleep.
PREPARING TO SLEEP
First, make sure your baby is spending enough energy during the day. Activities such as exercise on the abdomen, crawling on the floor, playing with his/her toys, or even accompanying you in the stroller while you are shopping makes the baby run out his/her energy and help him/her sleep better at night.
Just be careful not to tire baby too much. Just like adults, babies can get cranky and have difficulty falling asleep when they are overtired.
(1.5-2 hours before bedtime) Feed the baby nicely. Dinner should not be too close to sleep. Otherwise, it gives energy and creates difficulty while sleeping. It can also cause digestion and gas problems.
Reducing External Stimulants
(1 hour before bedtime) Reduce the lights in the room where the baby is. Turn off television and other noise-generating appliances. Collect excess toys. If you have older children, encourage them to do quiet activities.
Passive Pre-Sleep Period
(1 hour – half an hour before bedtime) Spend these 30 minutes doing activities that are not too active with your baby. You can play with a few toys, read a book or bathe the baby.
Giving the Sleep Signal
(Half an hour before bedtime) Take the baby and go to the bedroom. Remove everyday clothes to the cotton dress baby’s pajamas.Put a sleeping bag over your pajamas. However, do not put another blanket on the baby unless your home is too cold. Lie down on the bed together. Cuddle your baby. Fondle his/her hair. Make your baby feel loved.
TRANSITION TO SLEEP
(Minutes before the time you aim to sleep) Turn off the lights in the room. If you wish, a very low light can leak from the corridor. Always give the baby a feeding bottle he/she drinks or breastfeed him/her. If you are using a feeding bottle, always raise the baby’s head with a pillow. If you do it on flat ground, it will cause your baby to get ear infections. Also, some experts do not recommend feeding your baby before going to sleep. However, this is up to you and your baby’s preference.
Taking a Sleeping Position
When your baby finishes his/her bottle, take the pillow from under your baby’s head.
Lay the baby on its side, beside you, with his/her back leaning against your chest and his/her face facing out. If you turn the baby’s face towards you, he or she may find your face interesting and play with you. This prolongs the transition to sleep.
Hug the baby with one arm. The reason for hug is to prevent some active babies from standing up. When you hug, you have to be decisive, but not overwhelming. Do not put the entire weight of your arm on the baby while hugging. The aim is to prevent the baby from standing up and to keep him/her in a stable position as much as possible.
The most difficult phase of this method is the waiting phase.
If your baby has spent enough energy during the day, he/she will fall asleep without waiting too long. But if he’s/she’s not tired or wants to play games, you may have a hard time at this stage. The baby may be cranky, cry or want to run under your arm. Whatever happens, don’t let him/her get out of bed or change position.
If the baby is crying, you can tell lullabies softly or whisper into his/her ear “shhhh” .Don’t let the baby talk too much and lose his/her sleep.
Under normal circumstances, the baby will understand that you are determined to sleep and will surrender itself to sleep within 10-20 minutes.
If your baby is still crying violently and does not want to sleep after half an hour, remove him/her from the bed. Remove the sleeping bag and go back to the “Passive Pre-Sleep Period” activities.
Depending on the baby’s condition, after playing for another 30 minutes to 1 hour, continue to apply the steps where you left off.
Transfer to Bed
After the baby has been closed without opening his eyes for at least a minute, put him in his bed.
At this stage, the baby should not sleep too deeply if possible and he/she must perceive that he/she is going to his/her own bed.
Otherwise, he/she cries when waking up at night because he/she can’t find you the way he left you.
If the baby wakes up at night, take him/her to bed and quickly breastfeed or give him/her a feeding bottle.
In the meantime, one parent should prepare a bottle to prevent the baby from falling asleep, while the other one takes the baby in his/her arms and pat the baby gently.
The critical point here is not to give too much stimulation to the baby. Therefore, do not talk too much with the baby and if possible do not turn on the room light.
If you’re lucky, the baby will go to sleep after drinking the milk. When the baby falls asleep, immediately transfer him/her to his/her bed.
